Opti Race Team
More water time, more confidence, and a fun introduction to racing — no prior race experience required.
The PIBCSS Opti Race Team is a natural next step for younger sailors who are ready for more time on the water after at least one year of beginner sailing. Sailors should be comfortable handling an Opti independently and may join through coach recommendation or family interest.
This program introduces sailing in a more technically focused environment while keeping the experience fun, supportive, and team-oriented. Sailors build confidence as they develop stronger boat handling skills, learn race courses, starting sequences, tactics, rules, and good sportsmanship.
No prior racing experience is required — just a willingness to learn and try something new.
Race Team sailors may have opportunities to attend local and regional regattas and clinics, including events in the I-LYA Traveler Series, based on coach recommendation and family interest. Participation in regattas is encouraged but not required; many sailors join simply for extra coaching and water time.
Our goal is to help young sailors grow their skills, independence, and love of sailing while building friendships and creating a strong foundation for future C420 and ILCA (Laser) racing opportunities.
